Sandmill Strollers

Our March walk was through Kilbogget and Cabinteely Parks finishing in a delightful café in Cabinteely village. This is a beautiful walk alongside a babbling stream with stunning views of the Dublin Mountains – a completely new vista for all as none of us had walked here before. Some of this linear park has been constructed above an old dump and provides playing pitches for the local community – at this point the river has been culverted. Dun Laoghaire/Rathdown Council have sponsored a sculpture of a fish (made from recycled bits of metal) in the river and we watched many overwintering birds enjoying the river and the grassed areas.

April tempted us to explore Killiney Hill and enjoy the panoramic views out over the Irish Sea and southwards towards Bray and Greystones. The café in the grounds provided welcome shelter as the rain finally arrived and it was a brisk walk back to the car park trying to dodge the raindrops.

Our May outing was along the River Dodder, walking from St Philip’s and heading to Clonskeagh Bridge, then walking upstream to the back gate of the High School. It is always a delight to walk along the banks of the Dodder.

Do you enjoy a chat as you walk?  The Strollers meet on the first Tuesday of every month, departing at 1.30 pm from St Philip’s Church, Temple Road. We walk for an hour or two and try to stop for refreshments somewhere towards the end of our walk, returning to Temple Road by 4.30 ish. Do join us for one of these forthcoming walks:

  • 5 June: Kilcoole Beach & Little Tern Colony
  • 3 July: Hazel House Cafe and Tibradden Mountain
  • 7 August: Knockree to Crone Wood along Wicklow Way
  • 4 September: Bohernabreena Reservoir (circuit)
